Being the technology buzzword of the day, there is some confusion about the meaning of the term 5G in public discourse, so perhaps we should be mindful of what 5G is not.
5G is an informal term that is used by several industry think tanks to refer to the next generation of wide area wireless technology for use primarily on licensed spectrum. It is shorthand for the formal label IMT-2020,a tag owned by the International Telecommunication Union, which is an agency of the United Nations and thus represents the governments of countries around the world. IMT-2020 will eventually define a set of performance benchmarks that candidate radio technologies have to meet. This is a model that was followed for IMT-Advanced (4G) and IMT-2000 (3G),when candidate technology standards were submitted by collaborative organizations such as the 3GPP, the 3GPP2 and the WiMAX Forum.
